ARCHIVED - Married couple drowns on Torrevieja beach
The couple, believed to be Dutch, got caught in the undertow at La Mata

A 56-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman drowned on Torrevieja’s largest beach, Playa de la Mata, on Monday September 19 when they were unable to swim back to shore because of the strong current.
Official sources report that several bathers spotted the married couple struggling in the water and at least four other bathers tried to swim out to rescue them. The victims, believed to be of Dutch nationality, were eventually pulled from the swell and appeared lifeless on the sand when emergency workers from the Diputación de Alicante arrived at the scene.
Medical personnel performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) manoeuvrers on them to no avail, and the couple was pronounced dead on the beach.
It has been a tragic summer on the beaches of the Torrevieja area. Back in June, a 68-year-old woman died in the ambulance on the way to hospital after she was pulled unconscious from the waves at La Mata.
