ARCHIVED - Man drowns and three other bathers are rescued in Alicante
The incidents happened at beaches and pools in Elche, El Campello and San Juan
A 45-year-old man died and three other bathers were hospitalised in a series of drownings and near-drowning incidents in Alicante province on Wednesday July 13.
The fatal incident happened at El Carabassí beach in Elche at around 1.30pm. The victim was pulled from the water unconscious and members of the beach rescue team immediately started basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) was alerted and a SAMU ambulance and SVA nursing unit were deployed.
Medics performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and recovery techniques, but there was no response and the 45-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of the drowning.
Earlier on Wednesday, just after midday, CICU received reports that several people had pulled an unconscious woman out of a hotel swimming pool in San Juan.
The pool lifeguard performed a cardiac massage on the bather, in her 70s, whilst waiting for a SAMU ambulance and BLS unit to arrive. Fortunately, the medical team managed to recover the woman's vital signs after performing advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other techniques. She was then taken to San Juan Hospital for further observation.
Just half an hour later, a man was pulled out of the water with breathing difficulties on Muchavista beach in El Campello.
In addition to lifeguards, two doctors who were already on the beach assisted the 65-year-old before he was taken by ambulance to San Juan Hospital with symptoms of drowning.
Emergency crews were again in action in El Campello hours later after a 42-year-old man began having difficulties breathing whilst swimming at a communal pool. Two ambulances were sent to the scene and after initial medical assistance, the bather was also taken to San Juan Hospital with symptoms of drowning.
