ARCHIVED - 3 popular Orihuela beaches closed due to sewage spillages in the water
Cala Mosca, Cala Cerrada and Cala Bosque beaches in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, have been closed to bathers
Orihuela Town Hall has been forced to close three beaches to bathers due to sewage spillages at Cala Mosca, Cala Cerrada and Cala Bosque.
In a statement, the local authority explained that the Directorate General for Water, which measures the quality of beaches in the Valencia region, has detected "a high level of contamination of residual origin" along the Orihuela coastline.
"Quality controls of bathing water have brought to light an episode of contamination and following the instructions of the Directorate General, the affected beaches have been closed to bathing.
"The necessary work is being carried out to resolve this situation and the beaches will remain closed until the re-sampling carried out shows that the values are in accordance with regulations," said the Town Hall, without giving any indication of how long this could take.
The company responsible for beach maintenance and cleaning is currently looking for the source of the discharges, and analysis is being carried out every half hour.
"As soon as the results are good the beaches will be reopened, something that should be achieved quite quickly," said Councillor for Beaches, Antonio Sánchez.
In the meantime, red flags have been raised, a public address system has been set up and the local police are positioned at all beach access points.
In addition, the municipality's drone unit is on standby to ensure that no one enters the water and the jet ski rescue team has been deployed.
The closure will be a blow for Orihuela Town Hall, particularly at the start of the summer season and the fact the town boasts 11 Blue Flag beaches in recognition of the quality of their waters, amongst other things.
