As almost all of Spain swelters in an intense and almost unbearable heatwave, the State Meterological Agency (Aemet) has placed 46 municipalities in Alicante on red alert for extreme heat with at least two 'thermal peaks' expected this week.

"This heatwave could be the most powerful in Spain for a month of July and even August due to its intensity and duration," said Aemet spokesman, Cayetano Torres, despite experts predicting the end of the heatwave in Spain is in sight.

On Wednesday July 13, the mercuty reached 37.9º in Orihuela, 36.5º in Elche, 36.4º in Villena and 34.5ºC in Alicante city.

"it is rare for such high temperatures to be recorded, even exceeding 35ºC on the coast, at this time of year. Normally such high temperatures tend to occur on days with a westerly wind," added Aemet.

And things are expected to be get even hotter with further peaks this week.

The Aemet spokesman warned that there will be several consecutive days exceeding 44ºC "posing a high danger to human health".

But when will the highest temperatures be recorded?

According to Torres, the thermal peak of this particular heatwave will arrive on Thursday July 14, but it's not known when the episode will end, although he predicts that it will continue over the weekend.

"These are days of hell that are getting longer", he said.

The following towns are currently on red alert for heat: Alcalalí, Alcocer de Planes, Alcoy, Algorfa, Almudaina, Balones, Benasau, Beniarbeig, Beniarrés,

Benidoleig, Benigembla, Benilloba, Benillup, Benimarfull, Benimeli, Castell de Castells, Cocentaina, Dénia, el Ràfol d'Almúnia, el Verger, els Poblets, Gaianes, Quatretondeta, Gorga, la Vall d'Alcalà, la Vall d'Ebo, la Vall de Gallinera, la Vall de Laguar, l'Atzúbia, l'Alqueria d'Asnar, l'Orxa, Millena, Murla, Muro de Alcoy, Ondara, Ontinyent, Orba, Parcent, Pedreguer, Pego, Penàguila, Pilar de la Horadada, Planes, Sagra, Sanet y Negrals, and Tormos.
