ARCHIVED - Alicante-Elche airport recovers almost 90 per cent of pre-pandemic passengers
July hasn't got off to such a great start with Ryanair strikes causing holiday chaos
An influx of holidaymakers last month saw Alicante-Elche Airport recover 87% of pre-pandemic passengers with 1.35 million travellers passing through its terminals, half a million of whom were British.
However, holiday plans have this week been thrown into disarray with up to seven flights delayed on Tuesday July 12, the first day of the 2nd round of Ryanair Spanish cabin crew (TCP) strikes, leading to long queues of frustrated travellers.
Following failed negotiations with the low-cost airline, the unions have called 12 days of strike action by cabin crew to demand an improvement in working conditions.
According to the Unión Sindical Obrera (USO), several days of strike action have been called this week, from Tuesday July 12 to Friday July 15, July 18 to 21, and July 25 to 28.
A total of 8,846 flights were operated in June, 88% of those recorded in the same month in 2019, and the international market proved the largest, accounting for just over 1.15 million passengers, with a further 189,500 domestic travellers.
The countries that registered the most passengers last month were: United Kingdom (497,070), Spain (189,576), Holland (88,654), Norway (86,414), Belgium (71,926) and Germany (64,370).
Between January and June, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport recorded 5,705,242 passengers, which represents 83.3% of the traffic recovery in 2019, according to data from Aena.
During the first half of the year, the biggest recovery was in the domestic market with 817,641 passengers, 98.3% of the total number of travellers during the same period in 2019. The international market reached 4,879,023 passengers, a recovery of 81.2% of pre-pandemic figures.
