ARCHIVED - Long-awaited N-332 Benissa bypass set to open in July
Benissa Town Hall has been assured by the Ministry of Transport that the bypass will be operational this summer
After more than 15 years of delays the long-awaited N-332 Benissa bypass is set to open in July, according to the Ministry of Transport.
Benissa's Mayor, Arturo Poquet, has met with transport officials on a number of occasions recently to find out how the work is progressing, and they have assured that "work is quite advanced" and the new road should operational this summer.
The Transport Department is confident the work will be finished in July, meaning traffic will no longer have to travel through the town to get from one side to the other.
Construction of the bypass was scheduled to start in 2006 but the company awarded the contract went bankrupt and the project was put on hold for years.
In 2017, the 21.8 million euro contract was given to Obrascón-Huarte Laín S.A. (OHL), and "the most progress has been made in the last 12 months" with the company now focusing its efforts on finishing off the junctions on both sides of the town.
The new Benissa 1.3 km ring-road is a "conventional highway" with one lane in each direction, which will also allow access to various rural areas via the new roundabouts.
Until a few years ago, Benissa had a traffic volume of 12,000 vehicles per day, a figure which has been reduced since the scrapping of the AP-7 tolls.
"The opening of the new road in July will mean a further drastic reduction in traffic within the town centre," added Benissa's mayor.
