ARCHIVED - Valencia government once again rejects Benidorm bid for section of N-332 ownership
Benidorm Town Hall wants to have responsibility of part of the N-332 that runs through the Marina Baixa town
The Valencia region's Ministry of Transport has once again rejected a request by Benidorm Town Hall to transfer free ownership of a section of the N-332 national motorway that runs through the town between kilometre points 149.2 and 152.36.
This is the second time the Ministry has thrown out the Town Hall's request.
A first application was approved in plenary in October 2020, but refused at regional level as it "did not meet the requirements established in the Roads Act", so modifications were made and the local authority allegedly waited 13 months for yet another rejection.
The Ministry argues that "the aforementioned section does not meet the conditions of an urban road" and specifies that it requires "joint management of the AP-7 with the N-332 as a distribution road to the regional, provincial and municipal networks", which is "incompatible with the transfer of its individual elements".
The Town Council previously slammed the Valencian government's "attitude" which it claims "demonstrates that neither the Government nor the Ministry thinks about Benidorm, its businesses, its citizens or tourists".
And on hearing of the latest refusal, spokesperson Lourdes Caselles, has warned it will "prevent the improvement of mobility, accessibility and lighting of this section of motorway".
"The Town Hall feels rejected and punished by the Ministry because other municipalities, such as neighbouring Alfaz del Pi and Altea have requested the transfer of sections and been successful," she said, whilst calling for "equal treatment".
"The municipal management of this stretch of road would, amongst other things, decongest the nearby industrial estate and make the extension of the cemetery viable. It would provide a new exit to the Huerta; improve the image at the junction of the bypass with the Trinquet area; and reduce accidents."
It's not clear whether the local authority plans to modify and resubmit its request.
