ARCHIVED - Jail without bail for woman accused of killing British pensioner at her Costa Blanca home
The 80-year-old victim was shot dead at her villa in Elche, Alicante province
A 46-year-old woman arrested following the fatal shooting of a British octogenarian at her home in Elche on Wednesday May 4 has been charged with murder and remanded in prison without bail. Her 16-year-old son, believed to be an accomplice, has been sent to a juvenile detention centre while they both await trial.
Eighty-year-old Mónica W., a widow who lived alone, was shot three times at her home in the Elche district of Maitino near Torrellano with a 22mm calibre pistol, owned by the main defendant which has since been recovered.
Within 24-hours, the National Police arrested the mother and son, and discovered the weapon close to the murder scene. A workman who had been hired to carry out repairs by the victim allegedly saw the two detainees in the area and after discovering a "trail of blood", alerted police.
The motive is not yet clear and Violent Crime police teams from Elche and Alicante, together with the General Commissariat of Scientific Police from Madrid, continue to gather evidence.
With regards to the crime scene, the hypothesis drawn from in-depth ocular inspections revealed that the victim's body had been moved after the fatal shooting before being discovered by police.
In addition to the weapon, a burned-out vehicle belonging to the 46-year-old woman has since been located in Alicante city - the same vehicle identified by the workman.
According to police sources, the accused practiced sport shooting and had a gun license for the same model and calibre as the recovered weapon which she had allegedly reported missing in a theft the morning after the victim's death.
Investigators have now ruled out a random robbery and are "consistently considering the fact that the victim and those arrested knew each other previously, a fact that could be key to the investigation".
The police probe is ongoing.
