ARCHIVED - Alicante thief goes on 10,000 euro shopping spree with stolen credit card
A woman has been arrested in Alcoy for allegedly stealing a friend's credit card and running up thousands on clothes and in restaurants
The National Police have arrested a 40-year-old woman in Alcoy for allegedly stealing a friend's mobile phone and wallet, before going on a 10,000-euro shopping spree with a stolen credit card.
According to police sources, the woman splurged thousands on clothes, in restaurants and hotels and has been charged with fraud. Apparently, the victim didn't inform the bank that the card had been stolen, and as the thief was aware of the password, "she was able to make full use of it indiscriminately in shops such as perfumeries, restaurants, clothing, and even in different hotels".
Following a lengthy police investigation, police estimate the arrested woman defrauded around 10,000 euros, "which would have been much higher had it not been for the cancellation of various purchases made online".
The suspect, who has a police record for similar offences, appeared before the Examining Magistrate's Court Number 2 in Alcoy this week, and was released with charges pending a further court hearing.
In case of loss or theft of a credit card, the National Police advises contacting the relevant bank immediately to cancel it before filing a police report.
