Irish tourist arrested after fatal head-on collision in Torrevieja

A 29-year-old Irish man has been released on bail following his arrest over a fatal car crash on the N-332 outside Torrevieja on Sunday September 10. The holidaymaker was driving a rental car when he ploughed head-on into another vehicle on a single-lane stretch of road.

According to the Guardia Civil, the young man fled the scene on foot shortly before 5am. The victim was a 44-year-old man of Peruvian nationality and living in Guardamar.

Although the driver was long gone when officers arrived, it was quickly established through the car rental contract that he was an Irish citizen and his passport was flagged at the airport to prevent him from leaving the country.

He was eventually tracked down to his accommodation and arrested. Although he’s since been released from police custody, the tourist is being investigated for the crime of reckless homicide, which carries a prison sentence of between one and four years, and fleeing the scene of an accident, which could lead to three to six months behind bars.

If convicted, his driving licence will also be suspended.

Sadly, this wasn’t the only tragedy reported on Alicante’s roads over the weekend. On the same day, a motorcyclist lost his life on the Hondo road in Dolores. Medical personnel tried their best to resuscitate the 42-year-old but he died a short time later.
