ARCHIVED - Half-price Alicante Tram travel from February 1 until June 30
The offer will be available on Line 9 Alicante-Denia which is back in operation after 6 years of track renovations
The Valencian Government's barrage of travel discounts continues with a 50% discount on TRAM d'Alacant tickets from February 1 until June 30.
Half-price fares will also be available throughout the Metrovalencia, Tram de Castelló and MetroBus networks.
The promotion was announced by Valencia president, Ximo Puig, on Monday January 16 during the commissioning of the last renovated section of Line 9, between Gata de Gorgos and Denia, following an investment of 150 million euros.
The route has been modernised and will connect the eight municipalities of the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa linked through the FGV transport network.
During Line 9's inauguration, Puig highlighted the government's "continued efforts to offer increasingly accessible" public transport and help alleviate the effects of rising inflation.
"The last section of L9, which has now been put into service, has made it possible to renovate the route between Gata de Gorgos and Denia and make the line more accessible throughout the municipality," he added.
The project has seen the urban tracks integrated, level crossings now have traffic lights and walls that enclosed the tracks have been removed, putting an end to the division caused by the trenet that cut through Denia on its southern side.
In addition, TRAM workshops at Denia station, essential for the maintenance of the new dual trains, have been renovated.
Line 9 stopped running between Calpe and Denia in July 2016, when the regional government was forced to close the line between Benidorm and Denia due safety issues.
With the start-up of this section, Calpe and Benidorm will once again be linked to Denia, albeit with transfers at some points.
Users between Benidorm and Denia will have to change trains in Teulada, from diesel carriages to the new dual vehicles, as the former cannot complete the journey "for technical and accessibility reasons".
These transfers have already been met with criticism by some users concerned that the journey from Alicante to the Marina Alta town will take about three hours to cover the distance of 100 kilometres.
However, Councillor for Territorial Policy, Rebeca Torró, stressed that a "more sustainable" public transport model like this "is the only way to ensure that users can travel in a sustainable way and leave their cars at home".
"It will also improve territorial structuring and help combat climate change," she said, adding: "The aim is to ensure that cities and metropolitan areas manage to structure a more competitive, integrated, efficient transport and mobility system based on a rational use of urban space."
The 50% discount on regional transport will be combined with free public travel for those under 30 years of age.
The total cost of the initiative will be co-financed by the central government, which will stump up 30%. The Generalitat will subsidise the remaining 20% of the reduction.
