ARCHIVED - Benidorm slashes parking fees at most-used town centre car park
Registered residents will be eligible for parking savings of up to 60% at Benidorm's central l'Aigüera car park
While the cost of fuel and household products continue to rise, Benidorm Town Hall has approved money-saving parking discounts at a central car park, with further cuts for registered residents.
The council this week gave the green light to a change of management of l'Aigüera car park, located in the heart of the resort, after more than three days in private hands.
The car park is one of the most-used public car parks in Benidorm, due to its strategic location, with hundreds of motorists parking up on a daily basis.
And within the next couple of weeks, once the management transfer has been completed, parking will be 4% cheaper overall with an additional discount of up to 60% for registered residents.
The discount is stated in Ordinance no. 44 regulating the public price for the parking service at l'Aigüera car park, which was initially agreed by the Town Council in plenary session over a year ago and has now been definitively approved so that it can be applied over the next week or two.
The reduction of the rates establishes that the price for parking per minute will go from the current 0.033 euros to cost 0.0317, the hourly rate will be reduced from 2 euros to a maximum of 1.90 euros, while the maximum amount for a full day will be 38 euros.
Motorists who lose their ticket, in the event that the number plate reader system can not certify the time of entry, will also have to pay 38 euros to remove their car.
The firm Estacionamientos y Servicios (Eysa) has taken over the management contract from Parcosa, and will be in charge of the day-to-day running of the car park, at a cost of around 1.3 million euros per year.
However, the revenue will go to the council which will now be responsible for setting the fares and other management-related details.
How to claim resident parking discounts
Ordinance no. 44 states that to prove entitlement to the discount as a resident, the holder "must register as such in the databases of the company managing the service, or where appropriate, the Town Hall, proving both their status as a resident in the municipality, and the registration of the vehicle in the municipal tax register".
In the case of company vehicles, firms can prove their status as residents "by registration in the Tax Register of Economic Activities Tax, or when registration in this tax is not necessary, by certification of the commercial register of the registered office of the company or society in the municipality of Benidorm."
There are also discounts of up to 50% for locals and tourists who can prove that they have made a purchase in local businesses, by means of a shop, bar or restaurant receipt.
Last month, Benidorm Town Hall reached an agreement with the owners of several plots of land in the Rincón de Loix district to create a new park and ride car park with a capacity for 220 vehicles to alleviate car parking issues in the area.
