ARCHIVED - Government will decide today on whether to end Covid restrictions: Valencia update October 7
Capacity and opening hour restrictions in Alicante and the rest of the region are expected to be scrapped from October 9

A decision on whether to lift “as many restrictions as possible” will be made this afternoon, October 7, during a meeting of the Valencia government’s Interdepartmental Commission for Prevention and Action Against Covid.
President Ximo Puig announced on Monday that, after 18 months of confinement, closures and restrictions, the region is finally in a position to enter the final phase of de-escalation, and that the majority of anti-Covid measures will be scrapped from October 9, Community of Valencia Day.
But he stressed any decision will be based on the epidemiological data, which will be analysed by members of the Interdepartmental Commission today.
There has been a steady improvement in the health data over the last six weeks folliowing the fifth wave of the pandemic, with figures now similar to June, prior to a rebound in infections.
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate is hovering around 40 cases per 100,000 people, which places the region in a “low risk” category, data which it is hoped will allow the three provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón to move towards an “improved normality”.
It is expected that the green light will be given to the lifting of capacity limitations and opening hours from Saturday.
However, during recent meetings with government officials, these sectors have demanded a return to “pre-pandemic normality” with dancing on dance floors, and no time, capacity or social distancing restrictions.
On the matter of the mandatory use of masks indoors, Puig said on Monday that this decision will have to be taken by the Interterritorial Council, which is made up of representatives from all of Spain’s autonomous communities.
“It does not seem reasonable that there are some communities where facemasks are mandatory and others where they are not, because ultimately we have to provide safety for the public and reasonable guidance,” said the president.
