ARCHIVED - German youths cycle from Baden to Alicante to raise money for kids cancer charity
The young people have raised over half a million euros to finance cancer research over the last 20 years
A group of young Germans are cycling more than 1,700 kilometres from the town of Reutlingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany to the city of Alicante, Spain to raise funds for childhood cancer research.
This is 'The Relay', an initiative that was started by students of the ESB Business School in Reutlingen around 20 years ago.
After 13 days on the road, this group of young people has stopped in the Alicante town of l'Alfàs del Pi, where they stopped to rest and spend the night. Local Councillor for Sports, José Plaza, and the Councillor for Youth, Laura Sevilla, congratulated them for their valiant efforts.
The participants travel every year for about two weeks to a different destination. Everything is organised by the students: the route they will travel, the recruitment of sponsors and all the necessary logistics. This year the final destination was Spain, ending the tour in the city of Alicante.
The aim of this initiative is to raise as much money as possible for the German organisations Integramus and Förderverein für krebskranke Kinder Tübingen, who have been partners of The Relay since its inception.
Last year more than 30,000 euros were raised for these two charities and over the past 19 years, more than half a million euros have been donated, helping children to have a better future.
