Which supermarkets and shops are open in Alicante on May 1
Wednesday May 1, Labour Day or Día del Trabajador, is a public holiday in Spain
All of Spain will celebrate the national holiday of May Day or Labour Day on Wednesday May 1, known as ‘El Día del Trabajador’ in Spanish. Since it’s a public bank holiday, it’s a ‘red day’ so schools and most businesses will shut up shop.
If you’re one of the lucky ones who has a day off this Wednesday and are planning to do a spot of shopping, bear in mind that many supermarkets, stores and commercial centres will operate reduced hours, or close altogether.
Here are the May 1 opening hours of some of the main shops in Alicante city and province:
Lidl
According to the German’s supermarket chain’s website, all Lidl stores in Alicante city will open their doors at the usual time on Wednesday: from 9am until 9.30pm.
Carrefour
Carrefour supermarkets in the province of Alicante will remain closed this May 1.
Aldi
Aldi supermarkets throughout Alicante province will not open their doors on Labour Day, according to their website.
El Corte Inglés
El Corte Inglés in the city of Alicante will remain closed this Wednesday.
Mercadona
Mercadona will close all its supermarkets this Wednesday and will reopen on Thursday May 2 at its usual hours, from 9am to 9.30pm.
Consum

Puerta de Alicante shopping centre
The Puerta de Alicante shopping centre does not count Labour Day among its 2024 opening holidays, so it will remain closed on May 1.
Gran Vía shopping centre
The Gran Vía shopping centre in Alicante will only open its restaurant area on May 1.
