Foreign driver crashes into Torrevieja bar terrace, injuring elderly customer
The motorist sped through a junction in the Vega Baja city and was slammed by a drunk driver
A 73-year-old woman was seriously injured on Monday September 18 when a car driven by a foreign resident crashed onto the outdoor bar terrace where she was dining with other customers. The victim was transferred by ambulance to Torrevieja University Hospital.
The accident appears to have been caused by not one, but two, vehicles. The first, driven by the non-national, failed to stop at the Calle Fragata junction where it meets Avenida de las Habaneras, one of Torrevieja’s main and busiest roads.
The collision caused the first car to spin out of control onto the terrace, after first slamming into two large planters. The impact resulted in the entire closed canopy in front of the bar to collapse. Because of the amount of debris, the nearby pedestrian crossing had to be closed off, but thankfully no other customers were injured in the incident.
According to the Local Police, the foreigner sped through the stop sign, while the other driver, who was travelling in the direction of the city centre, tested positive for alcohol when both were breathalysed at the scene.
The type of fixed canopy in front of the bar, which comprises a metal framework and a raised platform that is level with the footpath, was only authorised in the Alicante city earlier this summer. It’s design is supposed to protect patrons from bad weather and minor accidents, but the sheer weight of the structures means they’re far more dangerous on stronger impact, so it’s a miracle more people weren’t injured.
In the last two years there have been at least four traffic accidents in the urban area of Torrevieja with serious material damage and injured customers, due to vehicles crashing into terraces beside public roads.
