Driver slams into bar terrace in Torrevieja
The motorist broke the nose of a Torrevieja police officer who tried to arrest him
There were scenes of high drama on Calle Concordia in Torrevieja on Sunday July 30 when a distracted driver mounted a kerb and ploughed into a bar terrace full of customers. The motorist then assaulted two people, one of them a police officer, while trying to flee the scene of the accident.
The dramatic events began to unfold at 1.50pm when the car ran into the seating area outside the El Zagalico bar, very close to the Colonia de San Esteban neighbourhood.
According to startled witnesses, the driver did indeed stop but, far from checking on the well being of the people sitting on the terrace, simply established that his car hadn’t been damaged before deciding to take off. Two of the diners were slightly injured in fact, by a concrete planter that was shattered in the impact.
Before the driver could make his get-away, an off-duty police officer who was inside the bar shouted at him to stop, and he and another customer grappled with the suspect. All three ended up on the ground and the officer suffered a broken nose and had to be hospitalised.
The driver managed to make it back to his car and sped away, but not before almost running over another witness.
It turns out that the suspect, of Moroccan nationality, is well known to the authorities in Torrevieja and has a lengthy criminal record. A search is now on to track down his whereabouts.
