Flames have ripped through a huge palm grove in Camino de Enmedio, Orihuela, this afternoon (Tuesday August 9), destroying most of the orchard and burning dangerously close to homes in the hamlet.

The first reports of a fire were reported just after 1pm, and fire crews on the ground and in the air were still dousing the flames at 5pm.

Two helicopters and a seaplane were deployed to extinguish the fire, given the proximity of the palm grove to the mountains, houses and cultivated areas.

Neighbours, who alerted the emergency service to the blaze, reported flames reaching several metres in height and thick black smoke.

There have been reports of injuries.

The exterior of a paint shop in Orihuela was destroyed and the interior totally smoke damaged after a car parked less than two metres from the store doorway caught fire and spread to the building on Monday afternoon, August 8.
