ARCHIVED - Police investigate 10 reports of spiked needle attacks on the Costa Blanca
The suspected syringe-attacks occurred in Benidorm, Denia and the Vega Baja area of Alicante province
As a terrifying new crime wave sweeping the country gathers momentum, police on the Costa Blanca have confirmed a further 10 reports of young women being injected and drugged by a stranger.
The syringe-attacks reportedly happened at parties, nightlcubs or "leisure areas" in Denia, Benidorm, Alicante and the Vega Baja area over the weekend.
Alicante Provincial Police Station has confirmed it is looking into four cases of women who have reported being injected with a drug that led to dizziness, nausea or fainting. Two of the cases under investigation occurred in Denia with a further two suspected incidents in Alicante and Benidorm.
There has been no suggestion of "sexual aggression" and as has been the case in so many reports, no traces of chemicals have been found in tests for toxic substances.
A further six complaints are being dealt with by the Guardai Civil in Marina Alta and Vega Baja areas of Alicante province; specifically Benidorm and Denia.
Since the end of May, 22 young women have sought medical assistance at Denia hospital suspecting they had been injected with a "date-rape" or other drug at a party or in a nightclub.
Concerned at the exponential rise in these shocking "needle pricks", the heads of Public Health, Denia National Police the Guardia Civil in Calpe and Javea met at Denia Hospital on Monday August 8 to implement new protocols to deal with these alleged attacks.
The Government delegate in the Valencia region, Pilar Bernabé, confirmed that the cases reported over the weekend "all involve people who believe they have been jabbed with a drug".
"In some cases it has been concluded that there was indeed a needle prick, in others there have been burns. So far, none of the procedures carried out have detected any toxic substance, nor any type of sexual aggression or robbery linked to this injection," she added.
"Date rape" drugging in clubs is nothing new, but until now spiked drinks have normally been the modus operandi of predators, and not injections. And of course, there has been a sexual motive, which does not appear to have been the case in most of the druggings sweeping Spain.
