ARCHIVED - Family rescued after engine fails on motorboat leaving them adrift near rocks in Denia
Three children were amongst those rescued off the coast of the Marina Alta town in Alicante province
Two adults and three children aboard a motorboat adrift off the coast of Denia, perilously close to rocks, were rescued and the vessel brought to safety at the weekend following an engine failure which left the vessel at the mercy of strong currents.
The maritime surveillance service of Denia Local Police spotted the speed boat drifting out of control between the north and the Punta del Raset breakwater at around 5.25pm on Sunday August 28, and quickly intervened.
The engine had broken down and the occupants were unable to restart it or steer the boat. According to police sources, the surveillance service was able to prevent it from careering into rocks and anchor safely.
A Salvamento Marítimo rescue vessel belonging to the Denia Red Cross then arrived and towed the boat to El Portet marina.
There have been no reports of any injuries.
Earlier this month, two boys dragged out to sea on a surfboard with one paddle were rescued by police more than half a kilometre from Denia coastline.
