ARCHIVED - Diver drowns at cove in Javea on the Costa Blanca
The 54-year-old died while diving off Javea's Cala Blanca beach in the Marina Alta, Alicante province.
Another life has been lost on the Costa Blanca coastline, with the latest casualty a diver who has drowned at a cove off Cala Blanca beach (or La Caleta) in Javea.
The tragedy occurred around 12.10pm on Tuesday morning, June 22, when lifeguards spotted the 54-year-old man who appeared to be unconscious, and pulled him from the sea before trying to resuscitate him.
The lifeguard service requested help from the Emergencies Coordination Centre (CICU) and a SAMU ambulance and medical team were sent to the scene, where advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other recovery techniques were carried out.
Sadly they were unable to save the diver, and a post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of the drowning.
Since mid-May there have now been eight drownings, prompting a beach warning from the Red Cross (Cruz Roja) after a pensioner - who was swimming at a beach in Guardamar in the Marina Alta without a lifeguard on duty - was lucky enough to be rescued and resuscitated thanks to the quick thinking of other bathers.
