ARCHIVED - Beach warning after drowing pensioner is rescued in Guardamar
The 74-year-old woman had to be resuscitated after swimming without a lifeguard at a beach in Guardamar in the Vega Baja, Alicante province.
A drowning pensioner was pulled unconscious from the sea by other bathers in Guardamar del Segura, 3km from Torrevieja, and had to be resuscitated prompting a warning about swimming without a lifeguard on duty.
The 74-year-old is believed to have had a heart attack while in the water shortly before 9am on Friday, June 18, before the lifeguard service had started.
Other bathers spotted the unconscious pensioner and immediately went to her aid, pulling her to the beach and contacting the emergency services.
The Red Cross (Cruz Roja) and a SAMU ambulance medical team performed advanced resuscitation techniques for more than 20 minutes, eventually reviving the woman.
Once she was stabilised, the elderly patient was taken to the University Hospital of Torrevieja with "symptoms of drowning".
The frightening incident has prompted a warning from the Red Cross of the dangers of swimming in the sea outside the official hours, basically before or after the lifeguard and rescue service is on hand to help out in case of emergency.
The pensioner was fortunate other swimmers were around to rescue her, as there have been seven drownings on the Costa Blanca since mid-May.
