ARCHIVED - Denia rules out Moors and Christians parade in September
Although the main events of the fiestas in Denia, Costa Blanca, Alicante province will not take place, a skeleton cultural programme will be offered instead.
The Moors and Christians federation in Denia, Alicante province, has ruled out the possibility of holding a September parade for 2021 due to a lack of time to prepare.
Instead, the organisation is considering an alternative program of cultural events, such as concerts and exhibitions to take place in August instead.
President of the Federation of Moors and Christians of Denia (Femmicc), Jimmy Ferrer, said that "in these complicated times" it was difficult to try to stage the traditional parade, but that alternative events are being looked into.
He said he is aware the public "wants us to put something on" and promised "we will try to replace the festival with events that can be held with total security" in line with government health regulations.
Everything, he said, depends on the progress of the vaccination campaign between now and August and Femmicc, the Valencia Region's health ministry and the Moors and Christians association UNDEFF, will meet in the coming days to try and work out a way forward.
The Moors and Christians parade is just part of the spectacular fiestas, which also include a battle on the beach, hugely popular with visiting tourists.
