ARCHIVED - Covid Update July 2: Two deaths and 1,271 new cases in Valencia region
Valencia is now the autonomous region with the fifth highest cumulative rate, a month after having the lowest in Spain.
The Valencian region, including Alicante province, is now the autonomous region with the fifth highest cumulative incidence - 141.06 cases per 100,000 people - with 1,271 new cases and two deaths announced on Friday, July 2.
This is in stark contrast to a month ago, when the figure remained below 30 cases, but is still below the national average of 152.86.
However, it's still an increase of 85 points in just seven days.
The total number of positives since the start of the pandemic has now risen to 405,195, according to the update of the Ministry of Health on Friday, with 193 new infections in Alicante province (150,124 in total), 945 in Valencia (213,250 in total), and 131 in Castellón (41,818 in total).
The data indicating a higher prevalence of Covid in the region has been backed by Valencia City Council today, which regularly analyses samples of waste taken from the sewerage system, and has confirmed "there is clearly an upward trend" with concentrations five times higher than a week ago.
The presence of the Delta variant has also been detected.
"This increase is considerable", says the city council, pointing out the data is similar to that found in May, "but from then on there has been an upward trend".
According to the region's Ministry of Health, the surge in positive cases is not currently causing concern in terms of pressure on hospitals, though the situation "is being followed very closely".
Hospitals: As of today, there are 174 people Covid patients admitted to Valencia hospitals - up 47 since Wednesday): 28 in the province of Alicante, six of them in ICU; 133 in the province of Valencia, 11 of them in ICU; and 13 in Castellón, with two patients in ICU.
Fatalities: The total number of deaths in the region since the start of the pandemic stands at 7,457. By province there have been: 2,848 in Alicante; 3,802 in Valencia; and 807 in Castellón.
Active cases: 7,056 across the three provinces, which represents 1.69 per cent of the total positives.
Recoveries: 252 patients have been given the all-clear, meaning 402,148 have recovered since the pandemic began. By province, there have been: 149,909 in Alicante; 210,083 in Valencia; and 42,099 in Castellón.
