ARCHIVED - Bumper weekend in bustling Benidorm close to pre-pandemic levels
The popular holiday destination in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, exceeded occupancy predicitions over the weekend
Benidorm's beaches, streets, bars, restaurants and nightlife venues were bustling over the holiday weekend with many hotels hanging 'no vacancies' signs and diners forced to queue for a table in restaurants.
Whilst the Spanish domestic market still accounts for the vast majority of visitors to the hugely popular resort on the Costa Blanca, Brits are making a welcomed return, and according to hospitality associations, there has been a surge in bookings since a relaxation of UK travel rules on October 4.
Javier del Castillo, president of hospitality association, Abreca, said the sector is experiencing a reboot, particularly over the holiday weekend following the lifting of the majority of restrictions, with trade similar to that of Easter, and close to pre-pandemic levels.
"There is a lot of atmosphere and movement these days and that translates into a lot of work. Benidorm is full and there are still a lot of people in the resort".
"At times, there have been people queuing to get a table due to the number of visitors staying over for the long weekend, or just spending the day here," added Castillo.
The hospitality industry is one of the hardest-hit sectors by the pandemic in Benidorm, along with trade, so being able to reach the levels of 2019 is "a huge relief, after everything we've been through", added the association president, who said businesses remain hopeful this "level of occupation" will continue into November.
In addition to the influx of national tourists in Benidorm, there has also been a notable rise in the number of holidaymakers from the UK in the last week.
"We are at pre-pandemic levels," said Alex Fratini, a member of Abreca. "It's been full to bursting the last few days and nightlife is also working very well,"
The forecast for hotel occupancy prior to the weekend was 72%, but some sources claim this figure has "been exceeded" and many hotels have had to hang up 'no vacancies' signs.
