ARCHIVED - British tourist fined for launching fireworks near forest in Javea
The holidaymaker has been handed a 750 fine for setting off pyrotechnics in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province
A Briton holidaying in Javea has been fined 750 euros for launching fireworks close to a forest during extreme heat and in an area at high risk of fire.
Residents living nearby alerted the Local Police after pyrotechnics were set off at around 11pm and officers managed to track down the culprit at a property in Calle Langreo in the Cestellans area of Javea.
Police put a stop to the Brit's antics and he was penalised under article 54 of the citizen coexistence ordinance that prohibits any type of action or practice that causes a risk of fire.
The hazardous incident happened on Tuesday night, July 19, when fires were raging across much of Spain, and thermometers were topping 36°C in Alicante province.
According to the European Forest Fire System (EFFIS), the recent wave of of wildfire blazes is the most destructive since records began, surpassing the carnage of 2012 when almost 190,000 hectares of land was ravaged.
