ARCHIVED - British tourist arrested for the attempted murder of his wife in Alicante
The woman “plunged from the sixth-floor” balcony of their Benidorm hotel
A 40-year-old British holidaymaker was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder after his wife suffered a horrific fall from their four-star Rio Park hotel in Benidorm on Saturday April 8. His 36-year-old-wife, also from the UK, is in a critical condition at the Marina Baixa hospital in Villajoyosa.
Several witnesses told investigating officers that the woman was standing on the balcony shortly after midnight, while her husband was in the room, when she suddenly plunged over the edge, falling from the sixth floor and suffering multiple serious injuries.
A police source has explained that it’s still too early to determine exactly what happened but that the authorities are looking at several scenarios, including attempted suicide and attempted homicide.
“Hopefully everything will become a bit clearer in the coming hours,” they added.
The Rio Park is situated in a quieter part of Benidorm than the main party strip but is just a five-minute stroll from Levante Beach.
A spokesperson for Spain’s National Police confirmed: “Officers have arrested a British man on suspicion of attempted homicide after his wife, who is also British, plunged from the sixth-floor balcony of their hotel in Benidorm.
“The arrest is a preventative measure and it will be up to a judge to decide what happens next after the man appears before him in the next day or so.
“The couple were sharing the same room and we are talking about a foreigner who has no ties to Spain so we are under an obligation to make the arrest as we try to determine what happened.”
The husband is expected to appear in court for a hearing on Monday April 10, at which point the judge will decide whether to offer bail or remand the suspect in custody.
