Brit arrested on Manchester-bound flight after Torremolinos hit-and-run
12-year-old boy suffered a fractured skull after being struck while walking to school
A British man has been arrested on a plane at Málaga Airport after a 12-year-old boy was seriously injured in an alleged hit-and-run in Torremolinos.The suspect was already on board a flight to Manchester when officers removed him shortly before it was due to leave. He was then arrested by Torremolinos Policía Local and remains in custody pending a court appearance.
The incident happened at around 9.45am on Tuesday September 15, as the boy was making his way to school with his 15-year-old brother. He was reportedly crossing the road at a zebra crossing on Francisco de Jorge Gallardo Street when he was hit by a white Opel Corsa.
The child suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Málaga's Maternal and Child Hospital, where he remains under medical care. The sources say a member of the public helped take him to hospital after the collision.
The car allegedly left the scene, with the boy's older brother reportedly running after it and shouting for the driver to stop. The family has described the youngster's survival as a "miracle".
Torremolinos Policía Local launched an investigation and traced the vehicle to a car hire company. Officers then established that the person believed to have rented the car was due to leave Spain on a flight to Manchester.
The Policía Local alerted the Policía Nacional, whose officers located the suspect on board the aircraft at Málaga Airport and made him leave before departure. He was subsequently arrested by Torremolinos Policía Local and taken to the force's headquarters.
Torremolinos Ayuntamiento confirmed the arrest but has not disclosed the man's name, age or nationality. The investigation remains ongoing, and he is being held while awaiting his appearance before the judicial authorities.
The arrest followed a rapid operation involving both police forces, after officers matched the hire car to the vehicle allegedly seen leaving the scene.
The boy was on his way to school when the collision happened, and his injuries required hospital treatment. No further details about his condition have been provided.
