Another earthquake shakes Granada after weeks of intense seismic activity
The 3.1 magnitude tremor was felt in Ogíjares and Granada city but caused no reported damage or injuries
A 3.1 magnitude earthquake has been felt in Granada as the area continues to experience tremors following weeks of intense seismic activity.
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded the latest quake at 9.54am on Wednesday September 16, with its epicentre in Ogíjares in the Vega Sur area of Granada. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 0 kilometres, which is really shallow, so it was felt by residents.
Another, smaller tremor had been recorded shortly beforehand. The 1.3 magnitude earthquake occurred at 8:44am, with its epicentre in nearby Alhendín, and was also felt locally.
Andalusia's 112 emergency service received around half a dozen calls from areas including Ogíjares and Granada city following the tremors. No injuries or material damage were reported.
The latest earthquakes come after the Junta de Andalucía downgraded its Emergency Plan for Seismic Risk on Tuesday, moving the response into the pre-emergency operational situation 0 phase.
The entire municipality has been through an extraordinary period of seismic activity. The current swarm began in mid-August with a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, followed by 98 aftershocks in a single night. By early September, more than 1,000 tremors had been recorded as part of the series.
The impact has been significant, with more than 700 people evacuated, 1,188 building inspections carried out and more than 5,700 calls made to the 112 emergency service. More than 500 psychological support services have also been provided.
Last week, the Junta de Andalucía announced a €46.2 million package to repair damage caused by the earthquakes after meeting with the mayors of the municipalities affected by the seismic activity.
