Biggest underwater wine cellar in Europe to be located in Cartagena
The Cartagena winery is large enough to hold an incredible 5 million bottles of vino
In addition to its stunning beaches and rich history, Cartagena now has even more to offer visitors with the addition of an exciting new underwater winery, the largest in Europe. The project was undertaken by the company Undersea, who explained at the grand opening last weekend that the submerged cellar can hold a whopping five million bottles of vino.
“Gastronomic tourism in Cartagena represents an exceptional opportunity to promote our rich wine tradition and offer visitors a unique and unforgettable experience. The recent inauguration of the largest underwater winery in Europe, located in our city, is a clear example of the innovative and attractive potential that this tourism segment has,” highlighted the Councillor for Tourism, Beatriz Sánchez del Álamo.
This novel tourist attraction is conveniently located on the island of Escombreras in the Port of Cartagena and promises to draw wine enthusiasts from all over the world.Wine enthusiasts can sign up to take a tour with Undersea in which they board a boat out to the wine cellar, located 4 nautical miles from the shore, where they will be given a talk (available in Spanish and English) on the process of ageing and storing wine underwater, as well as the chance to take part in a wine tasting session featuring red and white wines matured both on land and undersea to compare them. Tapas are also provided.
“The possibility of combining the beauty of our landscapes with the exquisiteness of our wines, especially in an underwater environment as unique as that offered by Cartagena, constitutes a unique attraction for wine tourism lovers at a national and international level,” the councillor added.
The lavish opening event was attended by several local dignitaries as well as winery representatives, specialists in the trade and well-known local producers, all keen to sample the underwater offerings.
And the Cartagena winery is already off to a running start, having produced two bespoke wines, one white and one red. Named Solivella, the grapes were grown in the Viña Elena winery and finished in bottles in the waters off the coast of Cartagena.
