Benidorm beaches spruced up for the Easter holidays
The Alicante resort has bolstered beach safety and cleaning services
As the Easter holiday approaches, Benidorm's picturesque beaches have been primed and prepared to welcome thousands of eager tourists for the first major holiday event of the year. With an influx of visitors expected, the City Council has announced comprehensive plans to ensure cleanliness, safety and first aid services are in place throughout the festivities.
According to Mónica Gómez, the Councillor for Beaches, a specialised operation has been devised to manage the surge in activity, which will run from March 23 until April 8, coinciding with school vacations and holidays throughout Alicante and nearby communities.
This includes the deployment of 20 Local Police officers daily, supplementing the existing National Police presence.
Benidorm is one of the few municipalities in Spain that has year-round cleaning and lifeguard services, but these too will be bulked up during Holy Week and the summer months. Over Easter, operational hours will be extended from 10am to 7pm, with dedicated lifeguards stationed across Poniente, Levante and Mal Pas beaches.
Additionally, two ambulances, each staffed with a nurse and a technician, will be stationed at Levante and Poniente beaches, alongside first aid points staffed with nursing personnel.
In a bid to enhance accessibility, three designated points at Calle Murcia (Levante), Parque de Elche and La Cala will cater to individuals with mobility issues, providing bathing facilities from 10.30am until 2.30pm, with two lifeguards stationed at each site.
The cleaning service will also see a boost in manpower, with 25 individuals assigned to manual collection across three shifts: morning, afternoon and night. Mechanical cleaning using tractors and sieves will be conducted overnight.
Unfortunately, two of the footbaths on Playa Poniente that were damaged by storms a few months ago still haven’t been replaced and while waiting for formal authorisation from the central government, Benidorm City Council has been forced to temporarily repair the existing facilities. A third footbath “could not be repaired as the damage was more serious”.
