Benidorm is making its beaches more accessible in time for Easter
Nearly 18,000 people used Benidorm’s accessible beach services during 2023
Benidorm City Council is gearing up for the first major tourist influx of the year, Holy Week, which this year falls at the end of March. In preparation, the city's beaches are undergoing a thorough cleaning. Furniture, sunbeds, umbrellas and other items have been removed to allow the sun's UV rays to naturally disinfect the sand and even out the terrain.
According to Councillor Mónica Gómez, this annual ritual ensures that the beaches are in pristine condition for Easter and the remainder of the year.
In addition, several beaches are undergoing renovations to make them more accessible for people with disabilities and more comfortable for all. On Elche Park, wind breakers have been installed to protect bathers on breezy days and the access points for wheelchair users will be freshly painted here, on Levante beach and in La Cala.
Several new amphibious chairs have also been purchased and the accessible pathways have all been repaired.
Ms Gomez said this week that accessibility has become "one of the landmark services" of the city's beaches.
"Benidorm was a pioneer more than two decades ago, facilitating bathing for people with functional diversity or who have mobility problems and thereby turning our beaches into a reference in terms of global accessibility."
Over the years, "many coastal municipalities have been incorporating this service, although the accessible beach points in Benidorm have the particularity of maintaining their activity throughout the year, always being attended by qualified personnel."
The popularity of Benidorm's accessible beaches is clear from the 2023 data, which shows that nearly 18,000 individuals utilised these services. Notably, during the peak summer months, the number of people using the accessible beach points surpassed 2,300 per month, with June recording the highest figure at 2,472 bathers, followed closely by July (2,360) and August (2,296). Even in September, the accessible beaches were still in high demand, with 2,347 individuals benefiting from the presence of three lifeguards at each point.
