ARCHIVED - Beach cleaning worker saves injured swimmer in Alicante
The Alicante bather ran into difficulty when he suffered a severe blow to the head

A young man in his 20s was saved from drowning by a quick-thinking member of the beach clean-up crew when he ran into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Cala Palmera in Alicante on August 21.
Shortly after 6pm, the worker from UTE Alicante took to the water to rescue the bather who “was floating in the sea” after suffering a severe blow to the head, presumably from crashing into the rocks which line the cove.
According to reports, the youngster was at the beach with his sister and a group of friends when the accident occurred. The cleaner heard cries of distress and ran in the direction of the commotion.
“There I found bathers running into the water to rescue a body. It was a great help to get him out of the water, when I saw the blow to the head and the purple colour on the boy’s face I thought it might be too late, but I acted quickly, in these cases the first few minutes are essential,” the local hero explained.
“First I opened his mouth and made sure that his tongue did not obstruct his airway by performing compression resuscitation. Luckily, he reacted quickly, on the third compression he began to spit up water, cough and convulse, a sign that he was reacting and oxygenating,” he added.
The modest staff member said he knew exactly what he needed to do in this emergency, life-threatening situation because he had taken first aid courses in the past, and recommended that all of his colleagues working at the beach do the same.
“During our work we come across cases of help and it is necessary to be trained for it,” he concluded.
