ARCHIVED - Beach tragedies: Faroese man, 43, and a Spanish pensioner drown in Alicante
The latest drownings happened in Benidorm and Elche
Another two people have tragically drowned on the Alicante coastline, bringing the total number of beach fatalities in 24 hours to three with a further three near-drowning incidents.
A 43-year-old man from the Faroe Islands who lived in Denmark is believed to have suffered a heart attack whilst swimming in the sea at Elche's Arenales del Sol beach. He reportedly collapsed in the water and was floating face down when a lifeguard pulled him from the sea. Attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene just after 2pm on Wednesday July 15.
The deceased's brother told police the victim was hypertensive and suffered from heart problems, although a post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of drowning.
In Benidorm, a 73-year-old man was pulled unconscious from the sea by other bathers at Poniente beach at around 8.45pm on Wednesday, according to the Centre for Information and Coordination of Emergencies (CICU).
A SAMU ambulance and a Basic Life Support (BLS) unit were sent to the scene and medics performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres and other recovery techniques, but to no avail. Again, a post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
In other incidents this week, a 45-year-old died and three other bathers were hospitalised in Elche, El Campello and San Juan.
