Beach toilets finally open in Orihuela Costa
There are still no beach bars, sun loungers or umbrellas at the Alicante resort
With the official summer season already half over, toilets have finally been installed on the Orihuela Costa’s 11 beaches and the council began opening them on Friday July 21. They will remain in place until September 15.
However, holidaymakers will have to go without a tipple at the beach bars since, due to a delay in the renewal of their licences, the doors to the chiringuitos have remained firmly shut all year. Beachgoers are also unable to rent sun loungers or umbrellas, and there are no water activities available.
The sticky issue of the beach bars has become the first major headache of the new PP-VOX government team in Orihuela, but it’s unlikely to be resolved before the end of the summer.
"As there is no contract for the installation of beach bars, which were associated with the toilet service, these have been urgently set up to provide the service to bathers," explained newly-appointed Councillor for the Coast, Manuel Mestre.
As of last weekend, each beach now has bathroom facilities for men, women and people with reduced mobility. The toilets can be used between 10am and 8pm and will be cleaned three times a day.
The bathrooms were eventually installed after months of complaints from neighbourhood committees in popular tourist hotspots like La Zenia and Cabo Roig, who relentlessly pointed out that holidaymakers were flocking to the nearby Region of Murcia where full beach facilities are on offer.
Despite the obvious impact on the local economy, Mestre is adamant that “this summer we have covered the basic services of the beaches, such as toilets, footbaths, the rescue service and access for the disabled. With this, we hope that Orihuela Costa residents and visitors can enjoy the municipality's beaches while we process other important services."
"The situation that we have found in the Department of the Coast is one of administrative chaos and we have had to solve urgent things, such as toilets, in order for the beach season to develop in optimal conditions," he added.
