Thieves steal Italian campervan to travel the Alicante coast
The robbers were only discovered when they fled the scene of an accident near an Alicante beach
They say that crime never takes a day off but the message obviously wasn’t passed on to two thieves who stole a campervan and a car and spent a few days holidaying along the Alicante coast.
The unusual story begins with a traffic accident involving the car. The driver fled the scene but as soon as police ran the number plates, they discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen in Italy. Officers quickly tracked the vehicle to a nearby beach car park and arrested their suspect.
Once in custody they realised the man was travelling with a companion in a campervan, who has presented police with forged Italian documentation. Further digging revealed that the registration plates of the motor home belonged to another Italian car whose plates had been robbed in France.
It was obvious that the locks on both vehicles had been tampered with, as had the chassis number of the second car.
Officers wasted no time in locking up the pair, who turned out to be from Croatia and aged 20 and 47.
The National Police is now investigating whether the suspects are part of a wider criminal gang. Although stolen campers are usually sold on the black market, it’s not unheard of for thieves to use them to travel anonymously, avoiding having to check into hotels.
