ARCHIVED - Javea cove overrun with caravans despite overnight stay ban
Residents in Cala Grandella in the Marina Alta, Alicante province, are calling for a solution to the "illegal" activity
Previous travel restrictions and fears over Covid contagion have led to a sharp rise in the number of people opting to holiday in caravans or motorhomes without the need to book hotels or apartments.
But many coastal towns are experiencing the downside of a surge in the vacation alternative, including Javea, which has seen its beaches overrun with caravanners in recent weeks.
In fact, the situation has become intolerable at Granadella Cove as caravans and motorhomes "invade" the popular coastal attraction, parking up overnight on the beach, despite this being illegal.
These vehicles are allowed to park in any of the beach car parks and use the accesses in the same way cars can, but they cannot stay overnight.
Despite this, caravans which 'camp up' in front of the beach, completely ignoring numerous signs explaining the regulations, have become an all too familiar sight.
Fed up and concerned, the Association of Neighbours of Cala Granadella is now calling on the Town Hall to come up with a solution to the situation to "avoid the overcrowding of caravans which is usually expected with the arrival of tourists during the summer season", adding that "maintaining the cove is everyone's job".
The association has warned that an influx of these vehicles causes "a great inconvenience in the maintenance of the area", as well as for the protection of the Granadella Forest Park, included in the Natura 2000 Programme.
There are also concerns that the plots of land currently used as beach car parks in Javea do not have the minimum services and facilities for camping overnight, and as such "waste is just being dumped in nearby green areas" creating a hazardous eyesore.
The Association of Neighbours of Cala Granadella is reminding visitors to the area that there are number of camping websites that detail routes, destinations and how to find authorised parking spots for caravans and motorhomes, including camping.info
