ARCHIVED - Crackdown on caravans and camping on Denia beaches
The town in the Marina Alta, Alicante province is amending its traffic ordinance to "stop the municipality being a black spot for caravan tourism"
Denia Town Hall plans to crackdown on camping on the town's coastline by banning overnight stays, but allowing caravans and camper vans to use car parks and spaces in front of beaches.
Until now, parking in front of Denia beaches was banned, but according to the Councillor for Citizen Protection, Javier Scotto, this regulation was "basically obselete".
"What will continue to be prohibited is camping – for that there are already sites managed by private companies such as campsites – but not parking up in the same way as other vehicles do.
"The biggest flaw of the ordinance as it currently stands was the assumption that the occupants of a caravan were going to use that parking space to spend the night or camp. In other words, to assume that they would be in breach of the regulations," he added.
In addition to clearing up the legal flaw, the local government wants to stop Denia from becoming a "black spot" in caravan tourism, especially in light of the fact "leisure trips, not only in caravans but also in camper vans, are becoming more and more popular due to the pandemic".
In a similar vein, Les Rotes car park is currently being refurbished and will include specific spaces for caravans and camper vans.
Other proposed amendments to Denia's municipal traffic ordinance include a ban on scooters and bicycles on pavements and in pedestrian areas to safeguard the public and "avoid risky situations".
