ARCHIVED - Calpe reopens La Fossa beach following closure due to contamination
The red flag has been lifted at the beach in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province
The waters at Calpe's La Fossa beach have been deemed "excellent once again" following a brief closure after "high levels" of pollution were detected on Tuesday August 30.
The red flag has been lifted after further "favourable" analysis was carried out by the Directorate General for Water, the body of the Regional Ministry of the Environment responsible for monitoring and controlling the quality of the water on Valencian beaches.
In addition, technicians from the Water Resources Planning and Water Quality Service took samples, the results of which were revealed on Thursday evening, indicating the "water quality is suitable for bathing".
Calpe's Councillor for Beaches, Maties Torres, has assured "there is no longer any trace of organic matter" (beach closures are typically because E. coli or enterococci levels have shot up) and that "the water quality is once again excellent".
La Fossa is the second beach to be closed this summer in the Marina Alta. Arenal beach in Javea was closed for 48 hours in July due to contamination and a popular Malaga beach on the Costa del Sol was shut recently due to the detection of E.coli.
