ARCHIVED - Another raw sewage spill at Gorgos river in Javea
This is the second time this month the river in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province, has been polluted with human waste
Waste disposal in Javea has hit the headlines once again following yet another sewage spill into the Gorgos River on Wednesday November 24.
This is the second time a culvert channeling human waste in the riverbed has broken, leaving the river and surrounding areas littered with "sanitary towels and other items that do not decompose", according to Ecologistes en Acció (Ecologists in Action) Marina Alta.
"Once again, the whole area is covered by wipes, solidified pieces of gauze from sanitary towels, toilet paper and other similar items that do not decompose and are typical of sewage systems," warned the organisation, which has previously lodged a formal complaint with the local council.
It was following a complaint earlier this month that the first breakage was repaired, claims the environmental group.
Over recent weeks, Ecologistes en Acció have also been warning of fatbergs (rock-like mass of waste found in sewers) at l'Arenal beach, something members claim "has always been categorically denied by the council".
In addition to demanding an "urgent solution" to the problem of pollutants entering the Gorgos River, the ecologists are also calling for better waste management after a fire forced the closure of Javea's Ramblars green waste landfill site.
The blaze broke out at the site next to the Gorgos River on Sunday morning, November 21, and is expected to smoulder for days if not weeks.
It's the second fire at the landfill in five years.
