ARCHIVED - Alicante-Elche named Best Airport in Europe in 15 to 25M passenger category
The airport on the Costa Blanca has once again been recognised for its "efforts to offer the best travel experience"
The Costa Blanca's biggest and busiest airport has once again reached the dizzy heights of being named the 'Best in Europe' by the Airports Council International (ACI).
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport has been awarded the distinction for its "efforts to offer the best travel experience" in the 15 to 25 million passengers category based on user surveys. This is the third time the aerodrome has been successful in this category, having bagged the title in 2018 and 2019.
Two years ago, the Alicante terminal was also recognised by the ACI for having the 'Best Hygiene Measures' against Covid-19 in Europe.
These awards are particularly relevant as they are the result of evaluations made by passengers in the ASQ (Airport Service Quality Programme, Airport Service Quality) surveys collected by the ACI.
The programme measures passengers' perception of the quality of service through questionnaires in which they rate their experience at airports on aspects such as access, facilities, staff friendliness, security and waiting time at the security checkpoint.
All participating airports use exactly the same methodology.
Alicante-Elche airport director, Laura Navarro, said the award "is an incentive to continue offering the best service to passengers and a recognition to all of us who carry out our work in these facilities".
"We are going to work along these lines, through the 2022-2023 quality plan implemented by the Aena team at the airport, which includes numerous measures focused on improving spaces and promoting more comfortable and inclusive processes for the different passenger profiles," she added.
Earlier this year, two vertical gardens of natural plants were installed in one of the busiest areas of the airport to improve the overall image of the terminbal and the wellbeing of travellers.
ACI was set up in 1991 to promote collaboration between airports and other partners in the aviation world, such as IATA (International Air Transport Association), or CANSO (International Air Navigation Service Providers Organisation), with the aim of contributing to "the development of a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly air transport system".
It currently has 712 members, operating 1,925 airports in 171 countries. In the category of airports with under 2 million passengers, Murcia's Corvera International Airport won the prize this year.
