ARCHIVED - Alicante airport goes green with vertical gardens to improve image and traveller wellbeing
The walls of natural plants are located in one of the busiest areas at Elche-Alicante airport
Two vertical gardens of natural plants have been installed at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport to improve the overall image of the terminal and the wellbeing of travellers.
The green wall modules are located in the busy check-in area and cover a surface area of 125 m2. The name of the airport has been incorporated into one of the gardens in white letters that stand out against the plant background.
Spain's airport operator Aena explained: "These gardens not only beautify the place and reduce visual stress, they also provide sound insulation and help to improve the thermal sensation in hot weather."
The garden designs were inspired by the waves of the Paseo de la Explanada in Alicante and the lushness of the Palmeral de Elche, and incorporate around 4,500 plants of 19 varieties in different shades, all of them species that do not require rooting to the ground, such as ferns and pothos..
In addition, the modules have an irrigation system with water recovery that only needs to replenish water lost through evaporation, so consumption is minimal.
In addition, as part of Aena's Passenger Experience Improvement Quality Plan 2023, a vertical garden with artificial plants of smaller dimensions (20.25m2) has been installed in the boarding area.
Alicante-Elche airport ranked 5th in Spain and 66th best rated airport in the world in Airhelp's 2022 list having dropped five places from 2019 worldwide due to the standstill brought about by the Covid pandemic.
The poll measures travellers' experience, good or bad, during their stay at the terminal, and the airport obtained an overall score of 7.57 points out of 10. It received 7.49 points for punctuality, 7.60 for customer ratings and 7.81 for leisure facilities such as shops and restaurants.
