A bus driver has died after being run over by his own vehicle which then ploughed into the shopfront of a furniture store in Muro de Alcoy.

The horrific freak accident happened at around 8pm on Thursday June 23, when, according to initial reports, the driver detected some sort of mechanical problem and got off the bus to check underneath the vehicle.

However, it appears the handbrake wasn't activated and the bus began to roll, running over and fatally wounding the driver and careering into the nearby store on Avenida País Valencià.

It's not clear if there were any passengers on the bus at the time or whether anybody else was injured, police have only confirmed the accident with brief details for the time being.

However, sources told Spanish press that as the bus began to move backwards, the driver attempted to stop it but was struck and killed. Extensive material damage was caused to the furniture shop.

An investigation into the tragic incident is underway.
