ARCHIVED - Alicante refuses to bring forward joint flu-Covid vaccination date
The health authorities in Alicante will begin offering both jabs to over 80s from October 17 as planned
The regional health authorities have decided against bringing forward the date on which they will offer residents simultaneous coronavirus and flu vaccines, instead opting to begin their double campaign with people over the age of 80 on Monday October 17.
This is contrary to the advice of health experts, who recommend double jabbing as many people as possible, as early as possible, since a more severe flu season is expected this year.
Minister Minister Miguel justified the controversial decision by stressing that the influenza season always begins at the end of October or the beginning of November, “because that is when the respiratory viruses are at their peak”.
Other regional leaders are taking a more proactive approach: Andalucia has already begun double jabbing octogenarians and on the 17th this will be opened up to people over 65. Several municipalities in the Murcia Region are also about to begin offering appointments for both.
Even though more people are actually inoculated against the flu now than before the pandemic, there’s an uncertain winter ahead without the usual coronavirus safety nets like masks and social distancing.
The good news is that, although influenza is already circulating in Alicante, it’s the A and B strains which have appeared, the two which are targeted by this year’s vaccine.
On Wednesday October 5 Alicante started administering the second Covid booster dose to all healthcare staff, representing around 130,000 people.
Regarding the joint administration of coronavirus fourth doses and the flu vaccine, once the over 80s have been covered the campaign will move down the line to the over 70s, then the over 60s.
