ARCHIVED - Alfaz del Pi Belgian restaurant makes generous charity donation
Belgomar Bistro in Albir in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, has donated 803 euros to Alfaz Food Bank
Albir-based Belgian restuarant, Belgomer Bistro, has presented the Social Volunteering Association of Alfaz del Pi with a cheque for 803 euros towards the municipality's Food Bank.
The money was raised during the restaurant's recent fourth anniversary celebrations, which coincided with the birthday of restaurant manager, Katy Eigenaar's.
"Katy told all her guests that she didn't want any anniversary presents and asked them instead to donate the money they were planning to spend to the Social Volunteers. In this way, they managed to raise more than 800 euros," explained association president Antonio Viso, after thanking Katy and Blanca, the bistro managers for their "generosity and solidarity".
The Social Volunteering Assocation (Asociación Voluntariado Social de l'Alfàs del Pi) currently has 44 volunteers who dedicate a large part of their free time to collecting, sorting and distributing clothes and food. During 2020 they spent more than 4,000 hours supporting the less fortunate in Alfaz and Albir.
The association was founded in January 2013 with the aim of assisting people at risk of social exclusion in the municipality, and has also recently received donations from the local U3A group.
"The local administration values and publicly supports the effective and discreet work carried out by the volunteers, a group made up of people of different ages and nationalities who dedicate thousands of hours each year to this important work," said the local council.
The pandemic has brought with it an increase in demand from families who have made use of the Food Bank and also in donations, both from individuals and associations of all kinds, festive and sports groups, associations of residents of different nationalities, groups of retired people, educational centres, companies, supermarkets and shops.
"We would like to thank this large group of people of different nationalities and ages for their work and encourage them to continue collaborating with us," added the association's president, Viso.
