Aguilas Carnival hits full swing despite the torrential storm!
Thousands congregated in the Plaza de España in Águilas for one of the biggest nights of the annual Carnival
The night of Saturday 1st March saw perhaps the worst weather imaginable in Águilas and the rest of south-western Murcia, with flooding causing the loss of at least one human life, but despite the cataclysmic conditions the spirits of the Carnival revelries was not dampened in the slightest!
Thousands gathered in the Plaza de España for the traditional battle between Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma, the arrival of the Carnival Muse and the official opening speech given by Javier Calvo, all of them contributing to one of the most eagerly-awaited events of the year in Águilas.
The evening began in the Town Hall, where Mayoress Mari Carmen Moreno witnessed the awarding of the “Golden Eagle” to Javier Calvo just before the battle began outside, with Rosana Gris and Juan Andrés García as the main protagonists. After the battle the Muse, Marian San Blas, appeared on the balcony of the Town Hall and thanked everyone for braving the elements to be there, before Javier Calvo, mimicking local actor Paco Rabal in “Los Santos Inocentes”, gave his speech.
The only concession to the torrential rain over the weekend was the postponement of Sunday’s parade until the following Sunday.
