ARCHIVED - 15,000 Brits expected to spend 12M in Benidorm over Queen Jubilee long weekend
The Costa Blanca resort is booming as UK tourists make the most of two public holidays to jet off to sunnier climates
Benidorm is enjoying the butterfly effect of the Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations with British holidaymakers making the most of the two public holidays and half term and flocking to the Costa Blanca's most popular tourist destination.
As was the case at Easter, Benidorm's hotels, bars and beaches are busy welcoming the return of UK tourists following two years marked by the Covid pandemic.
According to data from the hotel employers' association Hosbec, 15,000 British tourists will be staying in hotels in Benidorm alone this weekend, accounting for 45% of the total market.
These visitors will generate 60,000 overnight stays between June 2 and 5 spending around 6.3 million euros on accommodation. But Hosbec estimates that, once expenditure in shops, bars, restaurants, tourist attractions and on travel are taken into account, Brits will boost the local economy by up to 12 million euros.

Over the four-day period, 206 flights from the UK to Alicante-Elche Airport are scheduled – more than 38,000 seats.
And Hosbec is confident the effects of the UK's Jubilee long weekend will "reach beyond these four days" and a high percentage of tourists will extend their stay by up to seven days on average.
"Many families have taken advantage of the Jubilee weekend and school holidays to schedule their trip, and are likely to stay for a week or more," predicts the association.
"The figures relate to hotels, and when other types of accommodation such as campsites, holiday flats and second homes are added, the financial benefit will be much higher."
But whilst Benidorm is booming, a critical shortage of waiters threatens what is hoped will be a record summer season with bars and restaurants forced to close early as thousands of vacancies remain unfilled.
There are up to 6,000 positions currnetly being advertised in the resort, and industry chiefs have assured the problem has nothing to do with money - waiters earn 1,200 euros a month and up to 300 euros in tips - but a general lack of suitably trained staff.
