ARCHIVED - Woman escapes unscathed after building collapses in Almoradi
The woman was on the ground floor of the property when the drama unfolded in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province
A woman had a lucky escape after the top floor of a house in Almoradi collapsed on Sunday forcing the closure of the road which was left littered with rubble.
The woman, who is reportedly in "good health" was on the ground floor of the property on the corner of Calle de la Reina when the entire facade crashed to the ground just before 12.30pm on Sunday December 5.
It's not yet been confirmed exactly what caused the collapse, which has completely destroyed the top floor of the two-storey building, but according to Councillor for Almoradi Local Police, Alfonso García, it may have been due to the "age of the property" and the fact that "the beams that supported the perimeter of the balcony were broken".
The Guardia Civil, Local Police, a municipal architect and the Mayor, María Gómez, were quickly on the scene, along with firefighters from Almoradi and Orihuela, who spent two hours removing a cornice which was at risk of falling before clearing debris.
As a safety precaution, the whole road was closed to the public for most of the day.
