Watch! Holidaymaker accidentally drives rental car onto busy Tenerife beach and gets stuck
Playa de Troya in Las Américas becomes the scene of a viral blunder that left sunbathers bemused
A holidaymaker in the south of Tenerife accidentally drove a rental car straight onto Playa de Troya in Las Américas last week, only to become hopelessly stuck in the sand, in a moment that quickly went viral on social media.
The confused driver appeared to take a wrong turn off the promenade and onto one of the busiest beaches in the resort town, where the car became bogged down with its wheels spinning aimlessly. The incident was captured on video by shocked onlooker Andrey Krivashov and shared on Instagram, where it has racked up 121,000 views and dozens of comments.
Several nearby people quickly stepped in to help, pushing the car from behind while the driver revved the engine and tried to reverse and steer it back towards the promenade. After multiple attempts, the group managed to shove the vehicle onto firmer ground. No injuries or damage to the car were reported, and it is understood the driver was able to continue their holiday after the embarrassing rescue. The local authorities have not commented on the mishap.
Playa de Troya, located in central Las Américas, is one of the most popular tourist beaches in south Tenerife, surrounded by hotels, bars and pedestrian areas. Its dark volcanic sand and lively atmosphere make it a magnet for British sunseekers all year round.
One local joked it was a classic case of “when the beach parking looks too good to be true.” The video sparked plenty of amused comments online about holidaymakers struggling to navigate unfamiliar roads in Tenerife after taking a holiday rental car.
Brits heading to Tenerife are being reminded to stick to proper roads and heed the signs, especially when picking up hire cars at busy resorts like Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. The advisory is focused on tourists who may be unfamiliar with the layout of the area and the difference between a promenade and a beach.
Although the incident was more embarrassing than dangerous, it serves as a light hearted warning to take a moment to check where you are heading before turning off the main road, particularly when you’re surrounded by sunbathers and beach umbrellas.
