WATCH: British fugitive arrested in Javea, Alicante
The man was wanted for drug trafficking offences when he fled to Spain in 2020
A 35-year-old British man has been arrested in the Alicante town of Javea and is being held on an international arrest warrant. He has been wanted in the UK since 2020 on a string of drugs charges and Spanish police said that with his arrest, the main criminal organisation dedicated to the trafficking of narcotics in the British Isles has been dismantled.
As well as trafficking cocaine, heroin and ecstasy into the UK, the fugitive also faces charges for money laundering and belonging to a criminal organisation.
The Guardia Civil’s elite Central Operative Unit, UCO, tracked the wanted man to the Costa Blanca through information provided by the UK’s National Crime Agency. They, in turn, learned of the man’s whereabouts after analysing messages sent through encrypted communications network ‘Encrochat’.
Officers spent weeks covertly tracking the fugitive’s friends and associates and eventually traced him to a property north of Alicante.

“The home where he was hiding out was subsequently searched in an operation in which NCA and Metropolitan Police detectives participated. The fugitive has also been linked to the laundering of the proceeds obtained from the sale of these substances,” a Guardia Civil spokesperson confirmed.
“Another fugitive accused of belonging to the same criminal organisation was arrested by the Guardia Civil’s UCO unit in January last year in Palma in Majorca,” he added.
Last year alone, the force arrested 11,725 people under national warrants and 191 fugitives wanted by international orders. Throughout 2022, 389 international homicides and murders were investigated, 369 or 94.86% of which are now closed.
